ANNOUNCEMENTS AND BREAKING NEWS
I never did give anybody hell. I just told the truth and they thought it was hell.
~Harry S. Truman~
Please be sure to visit the appearances page for all the details about our huge rally beginning March 15th at a local college to raise awareness about the epidemic of child sexual assault and abuse. We will also be raising support to make a teaching film to be used in communites world-wide.
Please read about this amazing movie, "Precious." I waited for this movie to come out and my sister, who rarely goes to the movies was equally excited to go as well. I am personally grateful that not only has someone made an honest movie that depicts the horrific plight of the sexual abuse of a child but it is a huge box office success and it seems that the world and Hollywood is ready now, more than ever to look at this problem and shine a light on what was here-to-fore something to be avoided and hidden in the shadows. Although I was equally pleased to see the "Kite Runner" made, the movie depicts the story of a young boy who is gang-raped and how his life and the life of his best friend unravels over many years, until an eventual uplifting outcome, but not before much suffering. "Precious" also has an uplifting outcome and this is so important to show as it communicates hope for all. I just watched as Mo'Nique accepted an Acadamey Award for playing the role of a mother who allows the father of her daughter to sexually abuse her from the time she was a baby. The mother also sexually abuses her daughter as well as mentally and physically. Eventually the daughter, played masterfully by previously unknown actress Gabourey Sidibe, receives help and is able to make a better life. I think this is the first time in my life that I actually clapped my hands for an actor to be awarded an academy award. Not that I haven't been thrilled for other actors receiving awards, I love the movies!! That being said this particular film moves me and is very close to my heart because of my own sexual assault as a child. I am moved beyond words that the world is stepping up and placing the problem of sexual abuse of our children in the spotlight. This is a very good thing for us all. Upon acceptance of her award for Best Supporting Actress, Mo'Nique said to the audience and her husband how right he was that, "Sometimes you have to forgo what is popular for what is right." I appreciate this statement deeply because I chose to forgo what was popular to follow the vision of my heart and do what is right. So thank you Mo'Nique and Gabourey!! And thank you to Sapphire for being fearless enough to write this story. And to everyone who was involved in making this picture and to Oprah and Tyler Perry for making it possible for bringing into our lives.
Just a few short years ago this film would not have been made, let alone be receiving many awards and acclaim, including 6 Oscar Nominations. To learn more about this amazing film please go to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precious_%28film%29
